Why is my NVIDIA Shield not outputting TrueHD Atmos?
The Shield TV Pro can be a strong local-playback endpoint, but TrueHD Atmos still depends on the file, Plex server decision, subtitle behavior, app settings, Shield audio mode, HDMI route, AVR or soundbar capability and what the processor finally reports.
- Confirm the file actually contains Dolby TrueHD Atmos or DTS-HD MA, not only a compressed streaming Atmos track.
- Check Plex playback status for Direct Play, Direct Stream or Transcode, including whether subtitles triggered an audio or video conversion.
- Verify Shield audio output and passthrough settings inside the specific app, not only Android system menus.
- Route the Shield through a path that can accept the bitstream: ideally AVR or processor direct, or a proven eARC path when the TV is in the route.
- Read the AVR, processor or soundbar front-panel/reporting screen for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos/TrueHD, DTS-HD MA or a fallback such as PCM, Dolby Digital or stereo.
- Document whether the fix is server policy, Shield configuration, subtitle choice, HDMI routing, AVR mode or hardware limitation.

A Shield setup should be checked as part of the whole cinema chain, not treated as an Android box settings exercise. Cinema Machina verifies the server, Shield app, audio route, display output and processor report with real content before calling the setup complete.
- Confirm the library files and Plex server can support Direct Play for the formats the room expects.
- Configure the Shield, Plex app and passthrough settings around the actual AVR, processor, soundbar or TV route.
- Test TrueHD Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus Atmos, DTS-HD MA, DTS:X, PCM, subtitles and high-bitrate video separately.
- Verify HDR, Dolby Vision, resolution, refresh-rate matching and color output at the display or processor.
- Record what the processor reports during playback, because a working picture does not prove lossless audio.
